| | Prior to the formation of ECI in 2000, Gary A. Beller, Keith Bawolek, and Mike Mattenson were all previously employed throughout Sam Zell's organization for 10+ years. All three principals were the senior executives of Equity Capital Holdings, L.L.C. since its inception in 1995.Mr. Beller was also Executive Vice President of Equity Office Properties Trust (NYSE:EOP) since its public offering in 1997 and Messrs. Bawolek and Mattenson were Vice Presidents.
Messrs. Beller, Bawolek and Mattenson were officers of Equity Assets Management, Inc. (EAM), which was Sam Zell's principal operating company during the successful Zell/Merrill Opportunity Funds I, II, III, and IV, in which $2.2 billion of equity was raised and invested in a portfolio of real estate assets totaling in excess of $6 billion.
Gary A. Beller - President
Mr. Beller was a senior executive with EAM from its inception in 1990 and was actively involved in the initial public offering of Equity Residential Properties Trust (NYSE:EQR) in 1993. In addition, Messrs. Beller and Mattenson have been the President and CFO respectively of Equity Hotel Properties, Inc. (a development, ownership and management organization). Mr. Beller was also responsible for a number of Mr. Zell's investments in the U.S. and Mexico. Prior to joining Zell's organization, Mr. Beller was the managing general partner of a private investment group in Atlanta, Georgia from 1969 to 1989. These investments included primarily commercial real estate in the southeast United States and corporate venture capital business investments nationwide. Mr. Beller was directly involved in the initial public offering of several of these entities, as well as the daily operations.
Mike Mattenson - Executive Vice President
Mr. Mattenson joined the Equity organization in 1990 and was the Assistant Vice President of Asset Management and Vice President, Finance for Sam Zell's Equity Property and Development Company, a leading owner and manager of retail properties throughout the United States, until 1993. After a successful tenure as CFO of Equity Hotel Properties, Mr. Mattenson joined Messrs. Beller and Bawolek to handle the day-to-day operational and financial responsibilities of Equity Capital Holdings.
Prior to joining Zell's organization, Mr. Mattenson spent several years at a national real estate brokerage firm in charge of all financial, administrative, and system functions, as well as four years as an auditor at Ernst & Young. Mr. Mattenson is also a Certified Public Accountant.
Michael Laing - Executive Vice President
Based in Richmond, VA, Mr. Laing is Executive Vice President of ECI Development Services, LLC. and is responsible for the successful implementation and execution of the Broad Street Community Development Authority master plan designed by ECI. Under Mr. Laing's direction, ECI is also converting the 460,000 square foot historic former Miller & Rhoads Department store adjacent to the newly completed Richmond Convention Center into a $80+ million mixed-use project containing a luxury hotel, residential units and retail uses.
Prior to joining ECI, Mr. Laing was with Urban Retail Properties and JMB Realty, its predecessor company, for 22 years, where he served most recently as Senior Vice President and Director of Client Relations. In this role, Mr. Laing was responsible for overseeing the company's servicing of various client portfolios and special project assignments, including property acquisitions, redevelopment feasibility studies, and property dispositions.
Mr. Laing's broad base of experience at Urban has included portfolio acquisitions (Houston Galleria - $360 million, Century City Shopping Center - $270 million), dispositions, and asset management responsibilities over a portfolio consisting of approximately 13 million square feet of premier retail, office, and mixed-use properties.
Mr. Laing also served in Urban's development division for 13 years, functioning as development manager for numerous major property redevelopments.
Adrian Hogg - Executive Vice President
Mr. Hogg is Executive Vice President of ECI Development Services, L.L.C. Along with Mr. Laing, Mr. Hogg is responsible for the successful execution of the Broad Street Community Development Authority master plan in Richmond, VA as well as with the conversion of the historic Miller & Rhoads Department store.
Prior to joining ECI, Mr. Hogg was employed by Urban Retail Properties for eighteen years, where he served most recently as Development Manager and Senior Vice President, with extensive experience in managing design and construction of numerous retail, office and hotel developments, such as The Westin New York at Times Square, BP Tower in Cleveland, City Place II in Hartford, The Plaza at Greenville Mall in Greenville and 116 Huntington in Boston.
Mr. Hogg holds a Master of Architectural Studies degree from the University of Massachusetts as well as a B.S. in Construction Management from Arizona State University.
William G. Waters - Financial Analyst
Mr. Waters joined ECI Investment Advisors, Inc. as a Financial Analyst in 2008. He provides economic research in equity, commodity, and real estate markets. He also conducts equity and fund analysis for the management of private investments in family trusts and retirement accounts. He is responsible for constructing financial models to advise private equity firms in their asset purchase decisions and participates in the due diligence process for clients.
He is a CFA Affiliate member and a member of the CFA Society of Chicago. He received a BBA in Finance from the University of Georgia's Terry College of Business.
